This week Pinterest launched a new feature where you can search hairstyles via a hair pattern search.
Pinterest is definitely one platform that is making a big effort for more exclusivity. In 2018 Pinterest has allowed users to filter makeup searches by skin tone, and more recently they banned weight-loss ads. And now with Pinterest’s new feature – Hair Pattern Search the platform has reached a higher level of exclusivity.
The new hair pattern search feature allows users to narrow down their search for hairstyles and hair colours by specifying their hair texture or hair type.
Hair-related searches can be filtered by “patterns” including Protective, Coily, Curly, Wavy and Straight and Bald/Shaved.
Pinterest states that their hair pattern search helps to narrow down the images you will see when exploring hairstyle ideas. They will use artificial intelligence to detect visual hair patterns in images, which will be shown in the relevant search.
Let’s Break Down Each Hair Pattern
Protective
Can feature grouped strands of hair that are either natural or synthetic. Hair can vary in length and density. Styles can include hair extensions, braids and twists.
Coily
Densely packed, compact or springy formations which can feature spirals, coils – sometimes known as kinky or kinky-coily. Hair can vary in density and porosity.
Curly
Curly hair can feature corkscrew curls, ringlets and spirals, either tightly defined or loosely formed.
Wavy
Loosely shaped “S” shaped waves, that can share properties from both curly or straight hair.
Straight
Consistently straight hair that doesn’t vary in shape.
Bald/Shaved
A head that is closely shaved, bald or with little to no hair.
